The emphasis on this list is twofold - we wanted to identify inexpensive retirement towns, but also find places that are highly livable. All the towns on this list have high cultural opportunities. We used our Advanced Search to find them.

This Victorian resort village in the northwest corner of Arkansas has steep winding streets and well-preserved Victorian-era homes. Some say it has an alpine feeling. It is famous for its outdoor Passion Play.

Bakersfield, California

Located in the San Joaquin Valley, Bakersfield has several things going for it as a retirement spot. For one, it is close to the Sierra Nevada's outdoor recreation. For another, it is one of the few places in CA where you can buy a home for less than the national median. It has 2 colleges, and a great collection of Basque restaurants.
